Buddhist Ordination at Korinji
The training of qualified students for shukke tokudo - ordination as novice Rinzai Zen Buddhist clergy - is one of Korinji's primary missions. Korinji is one of the few places in the West conducting this training in a fully traditional, rigorous manner.
In addition, Korinji is able to confer Shugendo shukke tokudo and post-ordination training for persons desiring to follow that path deeply.

Rinzai Zen ordination of two types are conferred within our community: shukke tokudo, and nyudo (lay) ordination.
Shukke tokudo is the usual ordination as Rinzai Zen clergy. It includes training in instructional, ministerial, and ceremonial duties sufficient to serve others in that role. For many applicants, a period of residency at Korinji is required. This may vary, though, depending on the age, experience, and ability of the applicant.
Nyudo ordination is a kind of lay recognition for senior practitioners in our community who wish to express a fuller commitment to the Zen path, while still living fully as laypersons. Though not ordained as monastic clergy, they are held to similar standards of practice and dedication.

Regarding Shugendo Ordination at Korinji
Shugendo shukke tokudo is also possible at Korinji. This can be followed by instruction leading to kegyo, the intensive retreat periods during which mikkyo practices connected to our Shugendo lineage are transmitted. For those who complete kegyo, denbo kanjo - dharma transmission empowerment - can be given.
